Beyond the Looking Glass
With Alan Barnes (saxophones and flute)
This is an original suite of music (album: White Rabbit) - Mike's settings of the words of Lewis Carroll. Besides the well-known poems (Jabberwocky, Father William etc.) there are several more obscure pieces from Carroll's works, including the very tender Faces in the Fire.
This is primarily a jazz suite but with broad influence, some owing more to Hindemith than Ellington. Carroll's life is discussed but this is essentially a music fest.
Alan Barnes has often been described as the best sax player ever to emerge from this country. He has lost count of the awards he has received. See Reviews
The Complete History of Music and Fruit
This is Mike in Victor Borge Mode. It reveals how W A Mozart was called Wam by his friends. Find out
- How Beethoven struggled to write Fur Elise.
- How garage music isn't necessarily music on a service station forecourt.
- How the Girl From Ipanema had severe problems trying to walk normally.
- How the Beatles evolved most of their tunes from 'Three Blind Mice'.
Packed with information and yet curiously uninformative this show reveals everything you ever wanted to know about music and didn't dare ask. And a good deal you probably didn't want to know too. And remarkably little about fruit. Premiered at the Purcell Room, it comes complete with genuine 'magic lantern' slides. See Reviews
How Pleasant to Know Mr. Lear
With Linda Grace. Another original suite of music (album: How Pleasant to Know Mr. Lear). Here the setting is The Owl and the Pussycat and other surreal "lyrics" by Victorian poet Edward Lear. With a mini-documentary on Lear's life and times, a magic lantern slide show and chatty personal insights, the emphasis is on fun and entertainment. A wide variety of musical styles is on offer, from jazz to 50's rock and roll, contemporary pop ballad and traditional folk. More Information
The Complete History of Jazz Piano
Subduing his skills as a presenter to those as a pianist, this is a serious (albeit with the odd moment of hilarity) retrospective of jazz piano. Maintaining that such a vast subject could never be comprehensive Mike focuses on a range of pianists and discusses their contribution to the genre, playing in the style of each. Pianists range from Jelly Roll Morton, Clarence Pinetop Smith and Meade Lux Lewis right through to Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Dick Hymen via Nat King Cole, Art Tatum, Errol Garner, Al Haig, Bud Powell, Thelonius Monk, Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans. The show is available with a trio or in solo version and lasts nearly two hours. See Reviews
My Mum's a Yoghurt
With Herbie Flowers. Mike teams up with the legendary bass player to present a show that is as off-the-wall as its name suggests. For many years they took the Edinburgh Festival by storm, and have acquired cult status performing everywhere from huge theatres down to prisons. Displaying an energy level almost unseemly in gentlemen of their age, they present beautiful, tender music in a haze of manic mayhem. Best seen rather than described, highly recommended.
The two are also available for more formal (or less-formal depending on your point of view) performances. They also perform tributes to composers (eg. Kern and Gershwin, and Coward and Porter). See Reviews
The Cigar Orchestra
This is a nine piece band including string quartet and jazz trio playing a mixture of standards and original pieces. All arrangements are original by Mike Hatchard. It features award-winning saxophonist Duncan Lamont. See Reviews
When Menuhin met Grappelli
This is a tribute show, but somewhat more sophisticated than the glut of Abba shows currently abounding. It seeks to capture an atmosphere rather than specifically emulate, and pays homeage to the unforgettable pairing of a classical and jazz musician on the Parkinson show. It features Mike on violin alongside Helen Sherrah-Davies, as well as Angie Mills (vocalist with the Syd Laurence Orchestra). See Reviews
Mike Hatchard in Cabaret
Formally known as Marvin Hanglider, Mike has that rare ability to make up a song on any subject on the spot. Laid-back and spontaneous, with a natural ability to interact with any audience Mike can entertain from twenty minutes to a full two hours, effortlessly interweaving from classical to jazz with all sorts of styles along the way. Quirky, relaxed and original. See Reviews
A retrospective of the Comic Song
Mike sings everything from Gilbert and Sullivan through to Victoria Wood via Noel Coward, Tom Lehrer, Eric Idle and Michael Flanders. As the humour is in the songs themselves the chat is entirely serious and factual. See Reviews
